Calculus of Variations
A branch of mathematics that is a sort of generalization of calculus. Calculus of variations seeks to find the path, curve, surface, etc., for which a given function has a stationary value (which, in physical problems, is usually a minimum or maximum). Mathematically, this involves finding stationary values of integrals of the form.

Calculus of Variations and Optimal Control
Calculus of variations and optimization seek functions or geometric objects which are optimize some objective function. Certainly this includes a discussion of techniques to find the optima, such as successive approximations or linear programming. In addition, there is quite a lot of work establishing the existence of optima and characterizing them.
